/Chemical Compounds

For students to learn the properties of a chemical equation. They will need to be able to understand the law of conservation of mass. The students will prove their understand of the law of conservation of mass through balancing equations. They will be able to identify the type of chemical reaction taking place from a balanced equation.

Unit Overview

I am proud that I can use math in science and successfully getting the correct answer to balancing the equations.

Personal Achievement

Chemcial Equations: represents, with symbols and formulas, the identities and relative molecular or molar amounts of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction

Balancing chemcial equations: the law of conservationof mass must be taken into account

The relative amounts of reactants and products
represented in the equation must be adjusted
so that the numbers and types of atoms are the
same on both sides of the equation

Enduring Understanding

STRENGTH:

Demonstrates the understanding of chemical compounds

REASON:

By doing the Around The School project, finding different chemical compounds helped me to understand the purpose and how important chemical compounds are for our everyday life.

AREA OF IMPROVEMENT:

Develops reading and writing literacy in science

Plan to Improve:

I can improve myself by opening up and accepting new information. Being able to read and accept more of what I am learning can improve my skills in writing.

Evidence of Work

Types of Chemial Reactions:

  1. Synthesis- composition reaction, two or more

    substances combine to a new compound

    1. A + X -> AX

  2. Decomposition- a single compound undergoes a reaction thatproduces two or more simpler substances

    1. AX -> A + X

  3. Single-displacement- replacement reaction, one element replaces a similar element in a compound

    1. A + BX ->  AX + B   or    Y + BX  -> BY + X

  4. Double-displacement- ions of two compounds exchange places in an aqueous solution to form two new compounds

    1. AX + BY -> AY + BX

  5. Combustion reactions- a substance combines with oxygen, releasing a large amount of energy in the form of light and heat

    1. 2H2(g) + O2(g) -> 2H2O(g)
